ASICS and Awake NY have teamed up again to create another timeless piece. The GEL-NYC is the fourth collaboration between the two brands and the first time that ASICS has allowed an external partner to create a new silhouette.
The GEL-NYC draws inspiration from both heritage and modern performance running styles.
While it’s not something designed entirely from scratch, Baque went into the Asics archive and mixed some of the new technology with a little bit of older design, hoping to get us all nostalgic, and sure he did.
The upper of the GEL-NYC references the GEL-NIMBUS 3, a classic running shoe from the early 2000s that was known for its comfort and cushioning. The GEL-NIMBUS 3 also had a distinctive look, with a mesh base and leather overlays that formed a zigzag pattern on the sides. The GEL-NYC incorporates these elements but also adds some embellishments from the MC-PLUS V, another retro running shoe that had a more aggressive and angular design.
